Treatment of gummy smile

Do you suffer from a gummy smile? Or toothless? Do your gums show when you smile and that bothers you? Do you avoid smiling frequently and are looking for a solution? Showing too much gum tissue or having very prominent gums when you smile can be very embarrassing. This is where a gingivectomy comes in although many people are still unaware that there are options to correct their smile.

The problem is not just the gum tissue A gum
smile ends when the proportions of the teeth, gum tissue and upper jaw are not in harmony with each other. Your smile then becomes a combination of:

  • A large amount of gum tissue
  • A small size of the teeth
  • An upright position of the upper jaw

What is that ?

A gingivectomy involves removing part or thickness of the gum tissue from one or more teeth in order to lengthen its height or length or to treat gum disease or to lengthen the height or width. Indeed, this intervention changes the shape of the gums to improve their appearance if

These have an unusual shape or show up a lot when smiling.

The diseased tissue is removed and the remaining gums will be attached to the stitches. The area is then cleaned and rinsed with special saline solutions. This surgical act is performed with special tools (electrosurgery, lasers, etc.).

The procedure takes place in one session under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. A surgical dressing, to be kept for at least a week, is then placed around the teeth and gums to protect the wound.

Gingivectomy does not present any major risks. Slight bleeding may occur during the first 24 or 48 hours.

Results

After the procedure, your dentist will prescribe pain relievers and antibacterial mouthwashes. Adapting good oral hygiene also helps in the recovery process. Indeed, it is very important to keep your mouth clean without brushing the operated area in question as long as the bandage is still in place. Your gums will begin to look normal within three to four weeks after the procedure. It is worth mentioning that it is highly recommended to avoid spicy and crunchy foods
Gums heal completely after 2-3 months.
