Root canal treatment

Common root canal symptoms

Among the common causes of a root canal infection: deep decay, crack in the tooth … If your tooth is decayed or damaged, a root canal treatment will repair your affected or damaged nerves. It will also allow you to preserve your tooth and save it from an extraction.

Symptoms you may experience:

  • Severe tooth pain
  • Swelling
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Sensitivity to pressure, chewing and touch
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Bad breath

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is often necessary on severely decayed or infected teeth.
Depending on the complexity of your situation, your root canal treatment may require several appointments with your dentist. Usually, he will assess your tooth to identify the problem. Once this has been set you can go ahead with the treatment, it numbs the area to be treated and creates an opening at the top of the tooth. Diseased pulp tissue will be removed from inside the tooth and the root canals will be cleaned. If your tooth has suffered structural damage during the process, it will place a dental crown over the tooth to help maintain its structural integrity.

Treatment procedure

Usually, before the dentist performs a root canal treatment procedure, they will take an x-ray to determine how far the infection has progressed. Usually the area around the infected tooth is anesthetized, although in most cases the nerve is dead, but your dentist may anesthetize the area to be careful and to minimize the patient’s anxiety.
The dentist will then drill a hole in the tooth, from which the pulp, nerve, and bacteria inside the tooth are removed and then clean the inside of the tooth and seal it. The procedure may require another visit to make sure there is no infection. Often, after a root canal treatment, the tooth may need additional work, especially if there has been significant decay that may have weakened the tooth. In these cases, it may be necessary to place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to ensure that it is strong enough to function properly.

Alternatives to root canal treatment

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to root canal treatment that can save the tooth.

Without root canal treatment, the tooth in question will have to be extracted and the gap will be replaced with a dental bridge, dental implant or partial denture. Especially since tooth extraction can lead to complications, such as reducing your ability to chew certain foods or weakening surrounding teeth.
