PERIODONTOLOGY

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that treats gum disease. It is a discipline that has undergone revolutionary developments over the past decades

Gum disease also called periodontal problems are inflammatory diseases caused by bacterial plaques that strike the periodontium, which is the bones that surround and support the teeth.

Nowadays, even young patients can suffer from periodontal diseases that are strictly related to lifestyle: smoking and quality of oral hygiene. If they are not treated in time, the infection can deepen and worsen until successive loss of teeth.
In periodontal disease, we can witness a receding gums (periodontal recession) often discovered late since these diseases develop without pain!

Periodontal care is based on the removal of plaques and inflammation through different methods depending on the type (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis) and the severity of the situation. Indeed, the dentist will assess the disease and make a diagnosis to recommend the appropriate treatment. Simply put, the treatment for periodontal disease involves cleaning the tartar and polishing the teeth. Teeth become smooth and become more protected against bacterial multiplication. After measuring the depth of the pockets between the teeth and the gums, the roots are also polished using specific instruments that remove tartar under the gum. This is called scaling. The pockets are then wetted with antibacterial solutions.

After periodontal treatment, it is recommended to perform professional cleanings at your dentist to ensure and maintain healthy gums and teeth. These professional cleanings will also help remove dental plaques that are difficult to target from above and below the gumline.

Periodontal disease has a very negative impact on the general health of the whole body. It can cause various chronic inflammatory diseases and inflammation of the joints, hair loss or skin diseases. It can even make diabetes worse or make treatment for diabetes more difficult.

To summarize the above, we recommend that you visit your dentist at Targa Dental Clinic at least twice a year in order to familiarize yourself with your problems and provide them with quick solutions.
