DENTAL COLORING

Tooth coloring is a very common phenomenon that has a strong impact on the smile of people who suffer from it. Unfortunately, any smile with stains or discoloration on the teeth is imperfect. It is very important to determine and understand the type of tooth discoloration as each type requires special treatment to avoid any risk of unsatisfactory results.

There are three common types of tooth discoloration :

  • Age-related discoloration Teeth naturally yellow over time, they become more sensitive to stains and discoloration because the enamel covering the teeth becomes thinner.
  • Intrinsic discoloration In this case, the teeth darken and take on a yellow tint as a result of excessive exposure to fluoride, consumption of antibiotics, internal injury or bleeding, or illnesses.
  • Extrinsic discoloration In this case, the outer layer of the teeth is colored because of the excessive consumption of food coloring (coffee, wine, cola…) The regular consumption of tobacco also contributes to stain the teeth.

Food and drinks

Coffee, tea, snacks, wine, and excessive consumption of certain fruits and vegetables can stain your teeth.

Poor dental hygiene

Failure to brush, floss, and rinse enough to remove tartar contributes to the production of stains.

Smoking excessively

Smoking or chewing tobacco stains the teeth considerably.

Aging

As we age, the outer layer of tooth enamel wears down, revealing the natural color of dentin.

Genetic

Some people have a naturally less shiny or thinner enamel than others.

Environment

Too much fluoride from environmental sources can cause discoloration of the teeth.

Trauma

Trauma disrupting the proper formation of enamel can also cause discoloration of adult teeth.

It should therefore be mentioned that it is recommended to rinse the mouth after consuming any of the foods causing tooth discoloration to prevent it.
