As with any oral surgery procedure, dental cleaning is mandatory to remove dental plaque and tartar to facilitate the procedure and prevent inflammation. Depending on the indication, the gingivectomy may involve one or more teeth.
The area to be treated is first anesthetized. The excess gum tissue is removed with a scalpel blade and sometimes with rotary instruments. In most cases, no sutures (stitches) are required. The surgical sites will be painful for 24 to 48 hours and medication will be provided to relieve any discomfort you feel. A one-week follow-up appointment is usually necessary to ensure proper healing. A gingivectomy takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much gum tissue your dentist should remove.
